What is ALGA?

The Australasian Land and Groundwater Association (ALGA) aims to bring people with like interests together to network, build capacity, exchange ideas and further the science and technology surrounding the prevention, assessment and remediation of contaminated land and groundwater in Australia and New Zealand.

The Australasian Land and Groundwater Association was formed in 2007 to provide a forum and identity for the Australasian contaminated land and groundwater industry, and to support the many professionals working in the field.
ALGA is a broadly based national professional association incorporating members from industry, consultants, contractors, regulators, government, universities, researchers, laboratories, legal practitioners and those in managing and developing property.

Vision
ALGA’s vision is for Australia to lead the world in the sustainable management of contaminated land and groundwater.

Mission
ALGA’s mission is to provide a forum for the interchange of ideas and knowledge between people involved in the management of contaminated land and groundwater throughout the AsiaPacific.

Objectives
The objectives of ALGA are to:
• Meet the evolving needs and demands of an expanding and sophisticated contaminated land and groundwater remediation industry in Australia and the people involved in this industry
• Increase the knowledge and skills of people working in the contaminated land and groundwater remediation industry
• Conserve the natural environment by prevention, remediation and sustainable management of land and groundwater contamination
• Promote the protection and enhancement of land and groundwater and maximise its value
• Foster rational, open decision-making in protecting human health and the environment
• Foster basic and applied research that will advance the cause of better assessment, management and remediation of land and groundwater contamination.

The EPA Standard for the production and use of Waste Derived Fill has now been in place for over 12 months.

Come along to hear the speakers present their experiences with this Standard.

Has it reduced our reliance on landfill disposal?
Has it ensured environmental protection?
Has it helped reduce development costs?
Are there issues which limit successful application?

The presentations will be followed by an open discussion which will be a great opportunity to share your views on this topic.
Speakers:

- Amanda Lewis (Aurecon)
- Catherine Gray / Verilee Evans (DTEI)
- Jarrod Bishop (LBW Environment)
- Dick Sander, Business Development Manager, Hallett Resources
Representatives from the SA EPA will also attend.

Issues surrounding the draft revision to the NEPM (the NEPM Variation)

DATE: 23 February 2011
TIME: 5.30pm for 6pm start
WHERE: DLA Phillips Fox, Level 21, 140 William St, Melbourne
COST IN AUD$: $30 members & $50 non-members (light refreshments provided)
RSVP essential: Elisabethe Dank at - secretariat@landandgroundwater.com or (03) 9741 4679

Click here for online registration to this event.

Prior to the meeting we propose to carry out an analysis of each of the areas where change is indicated, to indicate whether the change appears to represent a benefit or a risk to either the owners of sites, to consultants, or to auditors.

If there are any changes/issues that members see to be good or have a particular concern about, please let me or Peter Nadebaum know (peter.nadebaum@ghd.com).

Note that ALGA did submit a comment to the NEPC on the NEPM Variation, and we will be using this as a base for the discussion.

The idea is to have the opportunity to discuss the "issues" that the draft NEPM raises, so that we can be aware of them. While there have been submissions prepared, do we appreciate all of the implications of the revised NEPM assuming it comes to pass, as it probably will? The forum is looking to educate ourselves of the issues that we should be aware of.

This should be an interesting meeting!

ALGA 4th ANNUAL CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS

DATE: 8 March 2011
TIME: from 8.30am
WHERE: Mercure Sydney Hotel, 818-820 George St, Sydney
COST IN AUD$: $154.00 (incl. GST) Price includes lunch and breaks as well as one or two workshops of your choice.
ENQUIRIES:
quitz@ecoforum.net.au or (02) 9410 1302 or www.ecoforum.net.au/2011

08:30 – 12:45

Successful ISCO and ISCR
Sponsor ERM and Hydroterra
Successful in-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) is defined as “having enough of the appropriate oxidant in contact with the contaminant for a long enough period of time to achieve sufficient destruction of the contaminant to meet the desired results.” Understanding oxidant selection, dosing, delivery, persistence and closure will be explored in this workshop.
In-situ chemical reduction (ISCR) technologies can be used for managing soil and groundwater environments impacted by chlorinated solvents, pesticides, heavy metals and other constituents of interest (COIs). This workshop will look at suitable ISCR technologies for various site settings and develop a decision tree to aid the remedial design process.

Sustainable remediation
Sponsor CH2M HILL and AECOM
This workshop will provide an overview of the rapidly advancing global sustainable remediation movement. Starting with a market overview that includes the business case for sustainable solutions, it will then go on to give examples of best practices and sustainable remediation technologies before looking at how sustainability can be integrated into remedial decision-making.
The workshop will also look at optimising remediation system selection, operation and performance monitoring to increase efficiency and cost whilst ensuring the sustainability of existing and future remediation systems. It will provide hands-on instruction in two online tools: the Sustainable Remediation Tool (SRT) and the Performance Tracking Tool (PTT).

14:00 – 17:00

In-situ thermal techniques
Sponsor Thiess Services and McMillan McGee
This workshop will evaluate various in-situ thermal enhanced remediation technologies such as convective heat transfer (steam or hot air injection), electromagnetic heating (electric resistance or radio frequency heating) and thermal destruction. It will also discuss combining in-situ thermal methods with other approaches for polishing such as bio-remediation and oxidation. The workshop will include several brief case studies of in-situ thermal techniques.
Various factors guiding thermal technology selection will be discussed. These include plume delineation, groundwater conditions and relative permeability. Design factors directing the thermal remediation process will be considered. These include thermal modelling, system layout, operational duration and electrical modelling.

Soil washing
Sponsor Thiess Services and CleanEarth
This workshop will focus on the strengths and weaknesses of soil washing from a North American perspective. The workshop is intended to be interactive and will touch on the history of soil washing, physical separation approaches, chemical separation techniques, integrated physicochemical approaches to soil washing and treatment train designs for various contaminants. Participants will gain an understanding of the applicability of soil washing and come away with realistic expectations of its remedial performance based on projects completed over the past five years.

Discussion at the ALGA groundwater remediation forum in November 2009 indicated that, in NSW, we could probably make better use of the range of technologies available for groundwater remediation. In par, development of alternatives to energy-intensive long-term hydraulic containment strategies was considered to be desirable.

The obvious interest in sustainable remediation approaches at a number of recent conferences applies to groundwater as much as to soil, but the gap between interest and implementation is wide.

Fifteen months on, have we progressed?

The following questions were posed at the last groundwater remediation forum:

Have the answers changed? This forum will consider practical and regulatory issues associated with three specific approaches to groundwater remediation, and the panel will consider the broader issues of whether we have progressed, and what the future holds.
